The Sales School Program has been updated. The program is designed to graduate HP sales reps with professional and business expertise; technical knowledge of HP's solutions and services; and knowledge of HP organizational structure, corporate objectives, and standards of business conduct. The program takes FSTs through several stages of development. Step 1: Orientation information FSTs are given orientation materials that include overviews of HP, their region and country, office issues, and local resources. The orientation materials must be completed within 30 days. Step 2: Basic Sales Training I (BSTI) SR1912 Over a two-week period, BSTI provides a variety of fundamental business skills including the sales process, time management, basic selling skills, terms and conditions, contract programs, leasing, remarketing, professional image, business conduct issues, personal styles, writing skills, and presentation skills. Step 3: Winning with Computer Systems Organization (CSO) Products and Services (WCPS) SR2802 During a two and one-half week period, FSTs learn about CSO products, support, networking, peripherals, strategies, and key differentiators. Step 4: Basic Sales Training II (BSTII) SR2912 During the two weeks of BSTII, FSTs learn PAR selling skills, telephone prospecting, strategic selling, consultative selling, and cold calls, and they complete a sales process case study. Step 5: Partnering with Your Customers SR2902 In a three-day business simulation FSTs learn financial basics and receive a computer-based simulation on how a company is run. Step 6: Selling HP Solutions SR391 During this one-week course FSTs participate in a full sales simulation in which retired corporate executives role play customer executives. The executives provide experience to the simulation and feedback to the FSTs during all phases of the simulated sale. Step 7: Environmental classes In the last training step FSTs attend the appropriate environmental training classes based on input from their district managers. FSTs may choose from environmental classes on engineering, manufacturing, IT and MIS, or mainframe. HP Focus provides an opportunity to expose customers to HP and to develop awareness for HP Channel Partner's products inside the HP market. Open Systems Today is undertaking HP Focus based on HP's growing leadership in the open systems market and on incremental advertising revenues they expect from new advertisers. Open Systems Today is a biweekly magazine for data processing and management information systems managers. The magazine's circulation of over 100,000 is primarily in North America and includes Europe and Asia Pacific. Qualified subscribers must be purchasers of open systems-related computer products and must buy over $100,000 annually to receive a free subscription. HP Focus, a 10-20-page section, will be distributed monthly to subscribers who own, plan to buy, or have products that run on HP equipment. Initially, HP Focus distribution will be approximately 45,000. HP is not sponsoring HP Focus. All articles will be written by the Open Systems Today staff to maintain impartiality. General Systems Division and Workstation Systems Group will have joint advertising in each issue. The first issue dates are September 28, October 12, and November 2. Creating awareness for Channel Partner products is made possible through cooperative advertising under the HP IMpact Program. For more information Refer to HP IMpact Program Guidelines, P/N 5091-4223EUS. Open Systems Today advertising contacts are Marlene Stork at 408-725-4309 for Channel Partners, or Terri DuFour at 408- 725-4337 for HP advertisers. ------------------------- Start of Article ----------------------------- 1;Computer News, October 1, 1992 2;HP Channel Partners New insignia for HP Channel Partners New insignia for HP Channel Partners Marcia Nowicky/VMC For the U.S. and Canada only Americas Value-Added Channels Marketing Center (VMC), with the approval of Corporate Legal and the Corporate Design Center, is introducing a new insignia that HP Channel Partners can use to promote their relationship with HP. Channel Partners are eligible to display the insignia once they have met the requirements: They must have a current signed HP Channel Partners contract or catalog agreement with HP; and they must have a signed copy of the HP Channel Partner Insignia Exhibit, Exhibit I-5, on file with HP. Channel Partners will automatically complete Exhibit I-5 as part of their HP contract initial signing or renewal process. HP is taking special steps to ensure that current Channel Partners are aware of the new channel program benefit. In September, North American Field Organization (NAFO) contracts reps sent copies of the insignia exhibit to Channel Partners in the U.S. and Canada whose contracts they manage. NAFO reps are responsible for tracking insignia exhibits for their local Channel Partners and for forwarding requests for insignia artwork to NAFO headquarters for fulfillment. Insignia exhibits will be handled differently for those Channel Partners whose contracts are not managed by NAFO contract reps. Several channel program managers have been identified to handle this task for certified workstation resellers (CWRs), distributor authorized resellers (DARs), and complementary vendors (CVs). These program managers will be responsible for mailing and tracking exhibits and fulfilling insignia artwork requests. In addition to exhibit mailings, the VMC is sending a general mailing by October 1 to Channel Partner presidents, executives, and marketing contacts listed in the VALID database. The letter will inform them of the new insignia and encourage them to sign and return the insignia exhibits that their companies will receive separately. Any Channel Partner that has signed and returned Exhibit I-5 is entitled to receive a copy of the Insignia Usage Guidelines for HP Channel Partners, P/N 5091-4512EUS, which contains the camera-ready artwork for the insignia. These guidelines are available from the Literature Distribution Center. The momentum continued in June with workshops that provided Channel Partners with product, application, and competitive information. Among attendees 99 percent rated the workshops relevant to their jobs and 97 percent stated they would use the materials in the next 60 days. Developing training for the indirect channel provides challenges. Unlike HP sales reps, Channel Partners are not dedicated to HP products and are harder to captivate. To gain their share of mind, the program must be interactive and motivational. These challenges were met on July 11 when CSO FEAD broadcasted its first teleclass to over 130 Arrow Electronics sales reps. The Arrow Electronics sales reps received product information on HP Apollo 9000 Series 700 workstations, X- stations, and HP 9000 Series 800 business servers. In addition to the product information, the broadcast covered information on HP's distributor program, the Channel Partner recruiting process, and competitive differentiators. During the development phase, FEAD collaborated with HP entities including the U.S. Field Organization, General Systems Division, Workstation Systems Group, Value-Added Channels Marketing Center, and the Americas Marketing Center Competitive Group. Information presented in the teleclass was leveraged from current product and marketing programs and customized for the Arrow audience. Although the teleclass was on Saturday, 80 percent of attendees rated it worth their time and 89 percent agreed that the HP managers demonstrated an excellent knowledge of the subject matter. Based on the success of the July event, future broadcasts are planned for other Channel Partners. The installed-base mailing program is being discontinued as a formal program. HP is recommending that Channel Partners use IMpact funds, co-op dollars, to buy or rent quality mailing lists from outside sources such as the HP Professional magazine or Interex to support direct mail campaigns to HP customers. These sophisticated lists can be targeted to reach designated individuals in selected industries or markets improving Channel Partners' chances of reaching their target audience and maximizing the return on lead generation expenses. A temporary hold has been placed on the Channel Partner-to- Channel Partner, formerly VAB-to-VAB, mailing program. The program allows Channel Partners with user referenced solutions to reach other Channel Partners with information about their products or to solicit cross-licensing opportunities. Requests for this service have outstripped the VMC's ability to fulfill them. The service is being placed on hold pending an investigation into a new database that will allow the continuation of this service. For more information Contact Sandra Brandon at 408 or Telnet 447-1325. To inquire about outside mailing lists, contact for Interex, Liwayway Gimenez at 408-746-1220 or HP Professional, Jane Hope at 215-957-1500. ------------------------- Start of Article ----------------------------- 1;Computer News, October 1, 1992 2;HP Channel Partners HP-UX and Domain/OS Solutions Catalog delayed HP-UX and Domain/OS Solutions Catalog delayed Marcia Nowicky/VMC For the U.S. and Canada only Due to fourth quarter budgetary restrictions, printing of the 1992 edition of the HP-UX and Domain/OS Solutions catalog has been postponed until FY93. An integrated circuit (IC) design group in the company was having difficulty meeting design time goals. The critical success factor was the amount of time incurred to complete the layout and routing of complex ICs. Because of the amount of iterations needed in the design phase, performance of both hardware and software was important. One of the challenges was to reduce a two-day routing period. The group standardized on Cadence's routers, Cell3, and Gate Ensemble products and transitioned their workstation engine from a competitor's 27 MIP workstation to the Model 750. The power of the Model 750 and its 76.7 MIPS allowed them to meet their productivity goals. IC placement time was cut from six hours to three hours, global routing was cut from two hours to one hour, and final routing was cut from eight hours to three hours. The customer purchased three additional systems. Features and benefits The recent release of HP-UX 9.0 provides support of data compression, startup/install/update, standard HP-UX backup commands including fbackup and frecover, DDS Fastsearch (fast random file access) via fbackup and frecover, and DAT with HP Omniback and Omniback/Turbo. P/N C1521B standalone SCSI DAT drive stores between 4 and 8 GB of data on a single 90-m digital data storage (DDS) cassette and transfers up to 2.5 GB of data per hour. Data compression performance is dependent on the type of data being compressed. Transfer rates are host and operating system dependent. DAT with data compression is also supported under HP-UX 9.0 as an integrated drive in all HP 9000 Model 8X7s. Customers should order Option AT2 to take advantage of the higher performance DAT drive with data compression. The AXSYS Applications System is client/server decision support software that allows applications to be built on an existing information technology foundation independent of database management systems, networks, and PC hardware and software. The AXSYS Applications System consists of three classes of software. AXSYS Object Manager--provides an object-oriented environment for the development and execution of applications on the HP 9000 platform; processes application logic and communicates with SQL databases and PC tools over local and remote network access protocols AXSYS Object Library--consists of object-oriented algorithms that are used as building blocks in the development of applications. A growing library of application objects are available to support applications including EIS, expert reporting systems, financial budgeting, sales forecasting, marketing and promotion analysis, and sales force automation. Database links are available for communicating with SQL databases and directly through EDA/SQL. AXSYS objects support the integration of multiple internal and external data sources, including A. C. Nielsen and IRI retail sales data. AXSYS Control Panel Links--connect graphical application control screens on PCs with the AXSYS Object Manager; are available for MS-DOS, Windows, Macintosh, and IBM/Metaphor Data Interpretation System. Application control panels can be developed using Channel Partner screen painting tools. Application results can be seamlessly delivered to Lotus 1- 2-3, Excel, Harvard Graphics, Word Perfect, and other PC tools. In most cases, Channel Partners are contacted by telemarketers who offer what is claimed to be a genuine HP toner. The price is below that offered by HP, and payment is required on delivery. The product is a refilled toner cartridge in an HP look-alike box. The box is bleached white with a blue stripe and purple label but contains no HP logo. The new kraft box is also being copied. One situation being investigated involves an exact copy of the HP box except that there is no box certificate on the bottom indicating origin and burst strength. Once the box is opened, there are other indications that the cartridge has been refilled. If you suspect that customers have been approached with a fraudulent product, contact Toni Berria at 208 or Telnet 323-4819. ------------------------- Start of Article ----------------------------- 1;Computer News, October 1, 1992 2;Peripherals 3;Terminals New software adds local user environment to HP X stations New software adds local user environment to HP X stations Mukund Ghangurde/PAD Product name and P/N: X station software Release B.04, see text for P/Ns Description: software release for HP 700/RX family of X stations that supports a range of local clients Target market: customers, installed-base users Effective November 1 software Release B.04 is available for HP 700/RX family of X stations.
